On the contrary, I finished a few fun and challenging projects this fall/winter. I've also been working on a new layout and branding for my blog that I am excited to share with you soon. As always in website design (and knitting!), everything take longer than you think it will. But I have been learning a lot and enjoying the process.

So, what have I been up to since my last post? Well...

I knit my second sweater (see my first sweater here)-- baby sweater for my cousin's daughter.

A few months ago I decided it was time to knit my first sweater. Serendipitously, the Woolful summer knitalong was just beginning, and it asked knitters to pick a pattern from Hannah Fettig's new book Home and Away, which is full of beautiful sweater patterns. (You can see my Moto Vest from the Woolful spring knitalong here.) I bought a copy of the book and decided on the Lesley Pullover because the construction was straight-forward, it used large yarn (aran weight), and I liked the simple design. I opted for the top down seamless route, but if you prefer seamed patterns, do not worry! Both ways are provided for every sweater pattern in Home and Away. Hannah Fettig is also the co-creator of the wonderful podcast knit.fm, which did an episode on understanding a sweater pattern (#3). I re-listened to that episode before starting my project, and would recommend that anyone who is new to sweater knitting, or has not done it in a while, do the same. I then visited my local yarn store Argyle Yarns, which carries Quince & Co. yarn - yay! - and purchased four skeins of Osprey in frost.

I did my gauge swatch and ended up moving up a needle size from the recommendations, meaning I used sizes US10 and US10.5. The project went very quickly, and I was able to finish my sweater in a few weeks. I could not be happier with how it turned out, and I would definitely recommend this sweater to any knitter interested in tackling their first sweater. The pattern is easy to understand, and because it uses large needles, you will be able to see your progress quickly.

It has only just begun to feel like sweater weather in Brooklyn, but I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities to sport my new Lesley Pullover soon. I have already started on my second sweater -- the Hancock from Home and Away -- and it is going great so far. A few months ago I decided to join the Woolful March Knitalong and make the Moto Vest pattern designed by Shelli Westcott of Knitterly. It took me a little longer than a month to finish this project - and even longer to find time to take pictures for this post - but it was actually a pretty quick knit. The pattern basically consists of two scarves (one long around the front of the body, the other shorter and down the back) joined together. It is a wonderful beginners garment.

I wanted a larger Moto Vest, so I initially cast on 58 stitches in Cascade 128 Superwash in Doeskin Heather (1926) on size US10 needles. Unfortunately I lost track of exactly how much yarn I used, but I think it was about six skeins. I knit flat using circular needles, because I find it easier to transport my knitting when it is on circular needles, and I like to knit on my subway commute. After I finished the two major parts and sewed up the seams, I wet blocked the vest. It took a few days for it to dry completely as the ribbing is pretty thick, but I am really happy with how it turned out.

On a recent trip to Block Island, I posed for these pictures. It was a great garment to have on the chilly New England nights that come even in July, and I look forward to wearing it layered with flannel and denim this fall. I also have some extra yarn from this project, so I might try to make a smaller version of this vest for me, or maybe a little sweater for Mae the adorable pug featured above.
As with most US east coasters, winter is usually my most productive knitting season. Sitting down with a pile of wool is just more appealing when it is cold outside, and this winter was a cold one for NYC. What is harder during the winter months - for me at least - is capturing pictures of my creations. With limited natural light and cold temperatures, I wasn't so motivated to set up photo shoots. And fellow bloggers will know that once you get out of the habit, it is hard to get back into it. That said, it looks like spring has finally begun in Brooklyn (despite the sad looking plants in the following pics...), so I got out my camera and started documenting my latest project (with a little help - pc: jpa). Here it is:
The past few weeks I have become obsessed with the podcast Woolful. If you are not listening, head over to the itunes store and subscribe (its free). Each episode features interviews with people in the fiber world (i.e. knitwear designers, yarn store owners, dyers, fibers farmers, and more). I listen to it on my morning commute, which has come to include subway knitting - usually on the B train.

During the month of March, Woolful hosted a knitalong (multiple knitters making the same project at the same time) around the Moto Vest pattern by Shelli Westcott. I learned about the knitalong from the podcast, and found the pattern to be really cute as well as an innovative way to enter the world of garment knitting. All you really need to know how to knit is a ribbed scarf -- see the clever way the project comes together here. When I was gifted some super soft Cascade 128 Superwash in Doeskin Heather (1926) at the end of March, I decided to cast on, despite not having a hope of finishing by the end of the month.

I went with size US10 circular needles, which I find easier to use if I am transporting my project. I casted on 58 stitches, because I wanted the vest to be on the cozier side. So far I have knitted about 1/3 of the project and used almost two skeins of yarn. I have four total, so I will probably have to get a fifth in order to finish since I want the vest to be hip length. I'm hoping to be finished with the project by early May, but with more time or bulkier yarn I could see this project taking many knitters just a few days time. So far it has been a fun pattern, and a great way to keep my hands busy while listening to Woolful.anna d.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00741694830633917780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5352497366365836387.post-42596913034490159892015-02-21T12:51:00.000-05:002015-02-21T13:19:42.597-05:00anna knits - traveling cable hat

A few months ago I knit a Brooklyn Beanie (free pattern) for my boyfriend. He got great use out of it at the beginning of the winter, but with snow storms and record low temperatures hitting New York he needed a warmer hat. About a year ago, I bought some luxurious merino wool from Purl Soho, and after knitting this hat I still had a little over a skein of the Toasted Charcoal yarn left. With this yarn in mind, I started looking at The Purl Bee for a pattern. I settled on the Traveling Cable Hat, which was free (yay!), and would allow me to practice cables.

MODIFICATIONS: After reading some of the reviews for the pattern on Ravelry, I decided to use size US7 and US8 needles, instead of the recommended size US5 and US6. (My boyfriend's head circumference is about 23 inches.) I also modified the pattern to be less slouchy by knitting the cabled pattern a total of three times rather than four. The pattern used just over one skein of yarn (164 yards per skein). While the hat fits well and has stretched out a bit since I finished it three weeks ago, if I were to knit it again I might even go up another needle size, just to make it a little roomier. The one technical issue I had was that since I did not own 20-inch circular needles, I knit the hat on 16-inch circular needles, which was a little fussy (due to the over-crowding), especially at the beginning.

In the end, I think the hat turned out beautifully, and I would recommended this pattern (with the needle adjustments I mentioned above). As you can tell from the picture of the hat being modeled (reluctantly) above, it has already gotten a lot of use. While I love seeing my knitwear in use, I am definitely ready for some warm weather. How many days is it until spring??anna d.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00741694830633917780noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5352497366365836387.post-80856267742014784852015-01-12T11:13:00.001-05:002015-01-12T11:13:14.747-05:00knitting, etc. - vogue knitting live

I was gifted some beautiful North Light Fibers Fingerling 80% Baby Alpaca, 20% Bamboo 2 ply yarn a few months ago. I was not sure what to make with it at first, but since I was not in the mood to knit on tiny needles, I decided to hold two strands of the fingerling yarn together and knit a hat with size US6 circular needles. I love the color combination of the gray and blue yarns, so I included a thin contrast stripe at the bottom. This is an easy unisex project that would make a great holiday gift. I included the pattern I used below.

A few weeks ago a friend asked if I would help out with an effort to knit santa hats for preemie babies at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). I myself was born at BWH, so I was particularly excited by this appeal, and volunteered to knit five hats by November 1.

For my hats I used Cascade 220 Superwash Sport in Really Red (809) and White (871). It took two skeins of red yarn and one skein of white to knit five hats. We used this free pattern by Sandy Davis, which I found easy to follow.

If you are interested in knitting for charity, especially as the cold weather and holiday season begins, Lion Bran Yarn has compiled a list of organizations seeking knitted donations for those in need. At the time of my last blog post I had just packed up my Boston apartment and was bound for my new home in NYC. Since then I have managed to find AND move into a new apartment (a feat in itself), unpack/furnish said apartment (mostly), take in beautiful views of the manhattan skyline (see proof above), drink delicious juice from my neighborhood juicer (again proof above), ride the subway (a lot), and much, much more. Life has been so busy I have not had much time to reflect on all the change. But I did take a few pictures along the way, which I wanted to share here.

Now that I am more settled, I have a few knitting projects in the works that I plan to share soon. I also created a Cousin Itt Halloween costume out of yarn this year! I will post pictures of it tonight which you can view on Instagram and Twitter: @annaknitsetc.

As you may have noticed, my blog has been pretty static for the past few weeks. This hiatus was not because I had no updates to share. The opposite was in fact true, as I have been so busy with big life changes that updating anna knits, etc. took a backseat. In the past month I quit my job, packed up my apartment, and moved 200 miles south from Boston to NYC. It is a lot of change, but I am excited about all the new possibilities - and yarn stores! - that await in the big apple.

I know August is not the biggest knitting month, but I am starting to get the itch to take on a new project. If you have any suggestions for great knitting resources in NYC, please leave me a comment or shoot me an email - annaknitsetc@gmail.com.
Last August I received two skeins of beautiful Sky Blue Lace fingering yarn from Block Island's North Light Fibers for my birthday. It is a super soft alpaca/bamboo yarn that isn't scratchy for people who are sensitive to wool. Well, almost a year went by and I still had not used this gorgeous yarn. So when I went to Block Island for a few days this June, I brought it along and decided to knit up a quick hat.

Instead of slaving away over a super detailed project, I decided to put two strands of the fingerling yarn together and knit using size US8 needles. I was in the mood to knit a hat, so I found an easy pattern from Purl Soho, and cast on. The result is a super comfy slouch hat that, due to its blue hue, has become dubbed the smurf hat.

Are you knitting this summer, or has the heat kept you from casting on?anna d.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00741694830633917780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5352497366365836387.post-83343528341571558812014-06-04T21:56:00.001-04:002014-06-04T22:01:22.691-04:00art, etc. - wool animation

If you love wool, you have to check out this amazing stop-motion music video by animator Ainslie Henderson. It is creative, touching, and will make you look at your yarn basket in a new light. The song is by the British rock band, James. Read more about the music video and the artist here.

As you may have surmised from my lack of posts, the last few weeks have been very busy for me. More to come on that soon, but first I wanted to share that I have in fact finished the penguin jumper I started a few months ago. It is a very quick project -- I am just slow with the posting :).

As I blogged a few months ago, in order to care for penguins caught in oil spills, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Phillip Island Nature Parks dresses penguins in knit jumpers so that they do not ingest deadly chemicals when attempting to clean themselves. They have a worldwide call out for knitters to send jumpers to the Centre. You can read more about the penguins and their knitted jumpers here.

You can find the pattern to knit a penguin jumper, as well as where to send the garment, here.

After a recent call went out, there was some controversy surrounding the Centre and its jumpers. You can read more about that here.

For the jumper I made, I used Bernat Softee Baby yarn in Flannel with US5 needles, and a little bit of Kambgarn yarn in Rosebloom for the embellishment. Some people get really creative with their embellishments, but for an intermediate knitter looking for a meditative project, a monotone jumper like mine is the perfect pick!anna d.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00741694830633917780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5352497366365836387.post-10817268067873996922014-04-17T20:54:00.001-04:002014-04-17T20:54:11.725-04:00anna knits - regina hat

This post is WAY overdue as I finished these hats in February/March, but better late than never, ya? Anyway, a few months ago I saw this hat made by @littlellama on Instagram and fell in love with the pattern. Inspired to knit my own hat, I went on Ravelry, and, by a stroke of luck, stumbled upon the exact pattern @littlellama had used. It is called Regina by Carina Spencer and it is a free download.

I decided to make the hat with some yarn I already had, Bernat Softee Baby in Flannel with size US4 and US6 needles (see first attempt Regina Hat pictures). I loved the flexibility of the pattern, since you create the crown based on the number of stitches you use to make the band as opposed to using a set number of crown stitches. But while I enjoyed knitting the hat immensely, I was not totally happy with the result. In the end, I was not a fan of the way the back of the hat slouched (you can see this better in the picture from the pattern), and I felt that the yarn I had chosen was not right for the pattern. I wanted the hat in a more substantial yarn.

With these criticisms in mind, I embarked on the pattern for a second time. This go-around I treated myself with a skein of Purl Soho Worsted Twist in Toasted Charcoal, and used size US6 and US8 needles. I kept the band pretty tight, because I knew I wanted the hat to be snug rather than slouchy. (You can measure the band on yourself as you go.) While knitting, the fan part may seem a little weird at first, but if you trust the directions you will be fine. Blocking is essential as you want the fan to lay right. I wet blocked mine, and used pins to hold the fan in place (see picture).

I was very happy with the result, and ended up giving away the hat as a present. I have another skein of the Worsted Twist and think I might knit up another Regina hat with it. I would definitely recommend this pattern to anyone who has mastered a basic hat and is looking for something a little a little more challenging. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. I have some exciting personal news in the works, which I will share soon. I also have some exciting knitting projects that are almost ready to post. For now though, I wanted to share some of delicious treats I've enjoyed in the past week. Have you been baking, making, or noshing on anything noteworthy recently? xo annaanna d.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00741694830633917780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5352497366365836387.post-25313187213737371332014-03-25T22:10:00.000-04:002014-03-25T22:10:43.980-04:00yarn bombing, etc. - the artist's process

By now you have most likely seen yarn bombing, either in person or online. But have you ever wondered what the artist's process looks like? I missed this video from Animal New York when it first came out, but it was recently sent to me, and I had to share. It is a great look into the technical side of yarn bombing. I hope it inspires people who are considering sharing their own yarn creations, but haven't taken the plunge yet. I myself have something in the works... Last week I escaped Boston's frigid temps for the warm beaches of Hawaii. I saw beautiful sunsets, got to swim with turtles, and ate some delicious Lilikoi Shave Ice (yum!). With 20 hours of combined flight time, I was also able to get a bunch of knitting done. Can you guess what I'm making in the picture on the left? Here's a hint.

A few friends shared this story with me, and it is so cute I had to repost. I have heard of knitters making penguin jumpers before, but this article from ABC Melbourne reminded me of the cause. Basically, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Phillip Island Nature Parks takes care of sick and injured penguins. When a penguin is caught in an oil spill, the Rehabilitation Centre dresses the penguin in a knit jumper so that the bird does not ingest the deadly chemicals when attempting to clean him/herself. You can read more about the penguins and their knitted jumpers here.

The jumpers are for little penguins, which, as you can see from the pictures, are quite small. The pattern calls for D.K./Sport/Worsted yarn on US5 needles. While I have not yet made one, it looks like it would be pretty quick to knit. I might take materials with me this weekend, so that I can make one on my upcoming plane ride (I'm going to Hawaii - woot!)

You can find the pattern to knit a penguin jumper, as well as where to send the garment, here.

I made this pear clafouti a few weeks ago, and it turned out so well that I made another one yesterday for a dinner my roommate and I hosted. I used Ina Garten's recipe, and it was so easy and so delicious I was surprised clafouti are not more popular! It was great warm, room-temp, and chilled. You really can't go wrong with this one. I'm looking forward to making another with different fruit - cherries, raspberries, topped with almonds... The possibilities are endless!

I waited a little while to post this one because it was a gift, but it is all good now!

I started this hat on Super Bowl Sunday and was able to finish it on an unexpected snow day the Wednesday after. The pattern is called Quick Cable Slouch Hat, and it is available for free from Azure Knits. I used Bernat Alpaca yarn in stone, which I picked up a Michaels, with size US8 and US11 needles. The pattern was easy to follow, and - as the author notes - would make a great project for first time cablers. Just to note though, it is definitely more of a slouch hat than a beret, despite the look of my picture on the right!

I am not the biggest sports fan, but I do enjoy watching sports on TV while I knit. Anything amazing is going to be replayed many times, so you don't have to worry about keeping your head down for a minute to focus on a complicated cable or color change. For yesterday's Super Bowl, I decided to take a break from making knit headbands, and cast on a cable slouch hat I found on Ravelry from Azure Knits. It is a really fun and quick pattern, and only takes one ball of yarn (yay for using those impulse buys). I hope to finish it up this week!
Did you knit during the Super Bowl this year? anna d.http://www.blogger.com/profile/00741694830633917780noreply@blogger.com0
